Plans for 2020
The April 1 celebration (Canceled Covid-19)
This year again, about eight guests from Havlíčkův Brod come to drive away the Spaniards with us. We hope
to welcome among others: Representatives of the Brod Municipality, Honza Schwarz - the blacksmith and a
music group.
Almost all of them are staying with host families again and will be joining the street group "De Rebellen". This
street group is located on Maarland NZ near the Juliana Bridge.
May: Visit of a deleggation from Brielle to Havlíčkův Brod (Canceled Covid-19)
Like every year, a delegation from Brielle will visit Brod again this year. On
May 8 there is an extensive celebration of the Liberation Day (WW II). As a
thank you for the annual Christmas tree, the “Bakersgroup” bake, among
other things - Kees Bije and Peter Kroone - oliebollen for the inhabitants of
Brod. The HBBC then has a beautiful wooden stand, where the oliebollen
can be baked and distributed. There are also a number of “sjoelbakken”,
where residents from Brod can become acquainted with this Old-Dutch
sport.

35 years twinning - twinning - 25, 26 and 27 September 2020
In May 1985, an official delegation from Havlíčkův Brod visits Brielle for the first time, followed by a first visit from Brielle to
Havlíčkův Brod. Then a friendship agreement is signed. It was the first twinning of a Czech city with a city in the west.
25, 26 and 27 September 2020 we celebrate 35 years of friendship between Havlíčkův Brod and Brielle.
More than 100 guests from Brod will come over to celebrate this 35 year twinning with us.
Evening of lights - 11th of December
This year we hope to light a beautiful Christmas tree again at “Lichtjesavond Brielle” (Evening of lights Brielle).
You will be informed about this in due course.

1948
At the beginning of 1948, the Communist Interior Minister fired 8 non-Communist
police officers. The democratic ministers from the government submitted their
resignation as a protest. They were replaced by party loyal ones. The Communists
called this coup “February the victory” (Vítězný únor).
Years of political oppression followed.
1960 The Prague Spring
Origin of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic
In 1960 the country officially became a socialist state according to the constitution
at the hands of Antonín Novotný.
1968 More freedom
Censorship was abolished and the population began to criticize the Communist
regime. In the same year, Alexander Dubček replaced party leader Antonín
Novotný. To the dismay of the Communists, the country became the liberal brother
of the Warsaw Pact. The Manifesto of 2000 words appeared on June 27, 1968,
which openly criticized the abuses in the country.
Russia wanted to put an end to these liberties and on the night of 20 to 21 August
1968, Russian tanks entered Prague. Poland, Hungary and Bulgaria also supplied
troops. All resumptions were reversed. Dissatisfaction grew and on January 16,
1969 the student Jan Palach set himself on fire in protest, followed a few days later
by another student, Jan Zajíc.
On April 17, 1969, the Soviet Union replaced Dubček with Gustáv Husák.
A period of oppression followed.

Czechoslovakia was a republic in Central Europe, created by
the collapse of the Danube monarchy (Austria-Hungary)

A (peaceful) division into the Czech Republic and Slovakia
